New Job

Category:

Today is my last day at my current employer. I have only been here for a short time. It just wasn’t a good fit. Looking back, I believe that I need three key items for employment. First, I need a reasonable salary. Everyone has their own definition of reasonable, but based on my prior experience and salary, it needed to be close (+/- 10%). As a single wage earner for my family, I really needed security. I need to feel that the organization will be stable. I will get yearly or more often salary reviews. There are areas for growth. Finally, I need to have an organization that believes that it is making a difference. It has a mission and goals.

The first company that I worked for was a not for profit organization that was established for the “betterment of mankind.” That is quite a goal for a research and product development organization. They put it in practice; turning away contracts that did not match its goals. This included work for legal cases as “experts” and non-defensive technologies for the DOD.

The last company that I worked for offered the best electronic medical record based on KLAS surveys. The owner had 10 rules that included stay private (hard to do in the late 90’s) to focus on the customer and co-locate (all staff are in Madison). She has a vision of a company working with healthcare organizations to deliver patient centric care. I really felt that we were making a difference.

For my new employer, I believe that it has all three. Healthcare organizations have a mission that I will now be apart of. I am also looking forward to working with my previous employer again. However, as a customer, it will be different. It should be fun.
